Roxy Ekberg, a third-year SJMC student and the executive editor of The Daily Iowan, was recently awarded the Mauck Stouffer Young Iowa Journalist Award from the Iowa Newspaper Association.

The UI Distinguished Chair is one of the highest honors bestowed on faculty at Iowa. It recognizes tenured scholars of national and international distinction whose work in research, teaching, and service strengthens the university’s mission and advances impact across Iowa and beyond. Recipients receive additional resources to support and expand their scholarly and creative activities. In addition, awardees hold the title of UI Distinguished Chair for the duration of their faculty appointment at Iowa.

Alberto Segre, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science,, and Carol Severino, professor of rhetoric in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences were among 4 other faculty receiving the award.

Casey DeRoo, associate professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Donika Kelly, associate professor, Department of English, received the award. Awardees receive $25,000 per year for three years to support their scholarly activities, along with mentorship and guidance on their career development plan.

The University of Iowa’s Center for Social Science Innovation (CSSI) has selected Brian Ekdale, professor of journalism and mass communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as its next CSSI Faculty Research Fellow.

Cathy Yea Won Sung, assistant professor in the Department of Biology, is the lead investigator on the project. She will aim to prevent permanent hearing loss caused by the chemotherapy drug cisplatin. Although highly effective at killing cancer cells, cisplatin can also damage healthy cells. This includes mechanosensory hair cells in the cochlea, which convert sound vibrations into electrical signals the brain can interpret. Once these hair cells die, they do not regenerate, leading to permanent hearing loss.

The University of Iowa has again been named a Fulbright Top Producing Institution among doctoral institutions for the U.S. Student Program. This is the 10th year Iowa has earned this prestigious honor from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Bowden’s research group will focus on designing and synthesizing sulfur and nitrogen-based polymers. Some of those combinations will be tested further as structures composed of more than 98% sulfur and nitrogen, which could yield better control over their chemical and physical properties.
