Five CLAS researchers shine in 2026 Discovery and Innovation awards

The Office of the Vice President for Research Discovery and Innovation Awards continue the University of Iowa's longstanding tradition of recognizing work across research, scholarship, creative activity, public engagement, and research support.
Honorees include David Miles, associate professor of physics and astronomy; Jessica Gorzelitz, assistant professor of health, sport, and human physiology; Robert Bork, professor of art and art history; Bingbing Zhang, assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication; and Richard Dvorsky, aerospace principal engineer and interim research administrator in physics and astronomy.
Two CLAS faculty members awarded participation in the 2026 Scholarly Teaching Program

Visiting Assistant Professors Elizabeth Crawford and Spencer Jones were selected for the Scholarly Teaching Program, allowing them to learn and develop effective teaching methods among a cohort of other instructors.
UI researchers aid rocket launch in Norway

David Miles, deputy director of research operations in UI’s department of physics and astronomy and a co-investigator for the rocket launch, was tasked with building the magnetometer attached to the rocket. While Miles had seen countless rocket launches before, Norway’s launch was a first for UI graduate student Jessica Mondoskin, the lead graduate student for the magnetometer project.
CLAS Advising extends drop-in hours for early registration

CLAS Advising has extended drop-in advising hours for Early Registration. These hours are available for CLAS students in their second, third, and fourth years who are advised by CLAS advisors. Students can be assisted with drop or withdrawal authorizations, registration authorizations, and urgent concerns. We encourage students to see their assigned advisor, and to utilize these drop-ins if they are unable to meet due to lack of availability during this busy time. Many CLAS students were among those recognized at the Hancher-Finkbine Anniversary Dinner Celebration, held Tuesday, April 7. The event’s centerpiece is the presentation of Finkbine Medallions, awarded to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, faculty, staff, and alumni who exemplify learning, leadership, and loyalty. Recipients are selected for their integrity, academic achievement, and contributions to university and community life.

Inspired by her personal experiences as an individual with hearing loss and her time spent teaching children who are D/deaf, Williams-Kane aspires to combine academic scholarship with community impact to create meaningful connections. This community-focused scholarship allowed her to be recognized by the Office of the Vice President for Research’s 2026 Dare to Discover campaign, which highlights impactful University of Iowa students and postdoctoral researchers, scholars, and creators on banners across downtown Iowa City.

CLAS School of Social Work faculty member analyzes aging from an intersectional perspective

May Guo, PhD, FGSA, associate professor at the School of Social Work, has long worked to advance the field of aging. Guo’s research focuses on minority aging, immigration, social determinants of health, and mental and cognitive health in later life stages, and her extensive work in the field of gerontology led to her recognition as a fellow by the Gerontological Society of America.
