As Iowa officials drill down on their fight to understand and address high cancer rates in the state, a mapping tool developed by University of Iowa researchers is informing their and other states’ work — and the network is set to keep growing.

Roughly 40 people attended the first event of the Iowa City Downtown District’s First Round Series Wednesday at Prairie Lights Cafe in collaboration with the University of Iowa Office of Innovation. Attendees heard from Robert Cargill, UI associate professor of biblical studies, who discussed the question “Can archaeology prove the Bible?”

Five CLAS graduate students have earned national and international recognition for their literary translation work—four receiving PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants from PEN America, and one receiving the Nadia Christensen Prize from the American-Scandinavian Foundation. Their projects span Kven and Norwegian poetry, Nicaraguan short fiction, a French literary classic, and a Finnish debut novel—a range that reflects the ambition and breadth of Iowa's Master of Fine Arts in Literary Translation, the oldest dedicated program of its kind in the country.

Roxy Ekberg, a third-year SJMC student and the executive editor of The Daily Iowan, was recently awarded the Mauck Stouffer Young Iowa Journalist Award from the Iowa Newspaper Association.

The UI Distinguished Chair is one of the highest honors bestowed on faculty at Iowa. It recognizes tenured scholars of national and international distinction whose work in research, teaching, and service strengthens the university’s mission and advances impact across Iowa and beyond. Recipients receive additional resources to support and expand their scholarly and creative activities. In addition, awardees hold the title of UI Distinguished Chair for the duration of their faculty appointment at Iowa.

Alberto Segre, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science,, and Carol Severino, professor of rhetoric in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences were among 4 other faculty receiving the award.
