The Stevens Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship

The Stevens Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship  was established in memory of Guy and Adeline Stevens by their daughter, University of Iowa Assistant Professor Emerita Harriet Stevens. The scholarship is equal to two semesters of resident undergraduate tuition.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a junior (minimum 75 semester hours completed by the close of the spring semester) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who has at least two semesters of work remaining for a bachelor’s degree in natural science.

  • The primary criteria for selection are professional promise and personal integrity, as indicated by the three required letters of recommendation (two academic, one personal).
  • Applicants must be degree candidates in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Applicants must have minimum grade point averages of 3.80 (University of Iowa and cumulative).

Luke Zaabel, a Neuroscience major, was awarded the 2023-2024 Stevens Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship.

Application

2024 – 2025 ACADEMIC YEAR

The Stevens Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship is awarded each year to a junior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with at least two semesters of work remaining (minimum 75 semester hours earned by the close of the spring 2024 semester) toward a bachelor’s degree in natural science. 

  • Applicants must be degree candidates in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Applicants must have minimum grade point averages (University of Iowa and Cumulative) of 3.80.

The primary criteria for selection are professional promise and personal integrity, as indicated by three recommendations (two academic, one personal). The scholarship is equal to two semesters of resident undergraduate tuition.

The typed letter of application must be submitted no later than Friday, Feb. 2, 2024. All application materials must be sent by email to phi-beta-kappa@uiowa.edu. Please include the following information: 

  • Name
  • University of Iowa ID number
  • University of Iowa (only) e-mail address
  • College of Liberal Arts and Sciences major(s)
  • Projected coursework for completion of degree requirements (be specific)
  • Names of the two faculty members you have asked to send letters of recommendation.  The letters must be received by Friday, Feb. 2, 2024.
  • Name of the person you have asked to send a personal recommendation. The letter must be received by Friday, Feb. 2, 2024.
  • In your letter, discuss your academic achievement and aspirations, including:
     
    1. special academic experiences in which you participated (honors work, internships, research assistantships, study abroad, summer programs, etc.);
    2. academic awards or honors that you have received;
    3. information regarding extracurricular activities in which you have been involved during your undergraduate career

Please note: Students do not need to be members of Phi Beta Kappa to apply for the Stevens PBK scholarship. The application for this scholarship is not processed through the central Iowa Scholarship Portal.
