For English and creative writing student Jack Sorenson, the University of Iowa’s English and creative writing program has helped him grow as a writer and become part of an engaged literary community.
“Everyone who's here in English and creative writing really is passionate about it,” he said.
Students from across the country and around the world come to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) to study writing, creating an environment shaped by creativity, curiosity, and shared ambition.
Iowa City’s literary culture gives students opportunities to immerse themselves in writing and creativity beyond the classroom through local events, readings, and community connections.
“The literary community in Iowa City is really robust, and there are so many opportunities to immerse yourself in being a writer and studying writing,” he said.
For Sorenson, the experience has been meaningful—helping him learn more about himself both academically and creatively.
“Iowa City has been an awesome place to figure out who I want to be,” Sorenson said.
