Are you new to campus? Or do you just need help familiarizing yourself with the many resources and opportunities offered by the University of Iowa? Read through these tips curated by another CLAS student.
My name is Emily Delgado, and I’m an incoming senior studying journalism and political science. I am involved with KRUI.FM, the student radio on campus, and I’m a student writer for Marketing and Communications in CLAS.
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the place to discover, explore, and create your story at Iowa. No matter which of our 70 majors you are studying—your education in CLAS will give you a solid foundation.
As we all get back into the swing of things, here are a few pieces of advice to get going.
Attend the student employment job fair
The student employment job fair is a great opportunity for students to get to know the many part-time employment opportunities offered on campus.
This fall, the fair will be held Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge. Last year, there were more than 30 employers that attended.
The fair is a great place to speak directly with employers. Many of the opportunities allow you to take skills you’re learning in your classes and apply them in a job or internship setting. For example, in my classes, I’ve learned how to write headlines, structure a story, and conduct interviews—all skills I use when working for CLAS.
Get involved with student organizations or performing arts
Iowa has more than 600 registered student organizations that focus on different topics, so you can find a group—or multiple— that matches your interests.
The Student Engagement Fair, held at the beginning of each semester, allows you to learn about the various student organizations on campus. If you're a new student, the fair is also a great way to connect with other students and explore ways to get involved on campus.
This year, the fair will be held on Sept. 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hubbard Park.
Another way to get involved is to audition for an upcoming theatre, dance, opera, or music production. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or looking for a new experience, you’re invited to sign up.
Auditions take place during the first week of classes and are open to everyone, regardless of your area of study. There are plenty of ways to get involved depending on what you’re looking for and your interests.
Attend the study abroad fair
The Study Abroad Fair is a great way to learn about the numerous international opportunities available to you. This year’s fair will be on Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Iowa Memorial Union ballroom.
If you’re interested in studying abroad, you can begin to prepare for the fair by meeting with your advisor to figure out what opportunity will be the best for your major and attending a Discover Study Abroad session.
Find your new favorite study spot
Whether you like to study outside, inside, or in complete silence, there’s a spot on campus for you where you can be your most productive self.
From the Main Library to your own dorm or apartment, knowing how and where you study best will be beneficial to excelling in your classes.
One of my favorite spots is the Psychological and Brain Sciences Building, which is a bit far from the center of campus but has floor to ceiling windows that allow lots of light to shine through. You can also explore some of the more unique study places on campus that are home to some programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Get to know your advisor
Every student has an advisor to help you explore your options for study, activities, and careers. Whether you’ve declared your major, or if you’re still figuring it out, it’s important to establish a comfortable relationship with your advisor as they will help you move forward in the coming semesters.
CLAS advisors are always ready to assist you with any questions you might have. On top of helping you figure out classes, advisors can connect you to resources and opportunities outside of campus.
