Cathy Yea Won Sung and Anne Martin, who joined CLAS last fall, are advancing research in hearing loss and brain science with support from the National Institutes of Health and the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust.

The Office of the Vice President for Research awarded funding to 12 interdisciplinary University of Iowa research teams to support the development of large, competitive grant proposals. Seven of those teams engage CLAS researchers. The program begins this year and will run through 2029.

Valerie Payré, assistant professor in the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability, was never interested in confining her research to Earth; instead, she expanded her horizons to studying the formation of volcanoes on Mars.

On March 27, third-year University of Iowa student Nina Osborne was working at the UI Admission Visitors Center when she checked her email. In her inbox, she read that she had been awarded a 2026 Goldwater Scholarship, the country’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship for students pursuing research careers in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering.
