Luis Muñoz, associate professor and director of the MFA in Spanish Creative Writing in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, has published his debut North American poetry collection.

One Moment follows the 2024 publication of Muñoz’s Un momento in Spain. His other recent books include Guadarrama and Vecindad.

The book presents Muñoz’s poems in their original Spanish, alongside English translations by writers Idra Novey and Garth Greenwell. The literary journal Asymptote credited the translators for writing in a way that “maintain[s] the bittersweet tone of Muñoz’s Spanish.”

The poems stay close to small things: Sunlight falls “like golden cookies on the bedspread.” Solitude “leaves a person as small and still as a garbanzo bean.”

“It’s thrilling to encounter poetry this fresh, this undeniable,” said poet Kaveh Akbar, author of Martyr! and Pilgrim Bell, in a review of the collection.

Muñoz was born in Granada, Spain, where he directed the University of Granada’s literature program and the poetry magazine Hélice. His honors include the Ciudad de Córdoba, Generación del 27, Ojo Crítico, and El Público awards.
