According to English and creative writing student Emily O'Brochta, the University of Iowa English program challenges students to think critically, engage new perspectives, and have confidence in their own creative voice.
The University of Iowa’s highly recognized writing programs draw students from across the country and around the world, creating a literary community shaped by collaboration, creativity, and a shared love of storytelling.
“I chose Iowa because of the English and creative writing major,” she said. “The faculty is incredible, and a lot of times you have the same opportunities as the graduate students for readings and workshops.”
Beyond the classroom, students have opportunities to explore publishing, attend literary events, and connect with writers from a variety of backgrounds.
“You really do get to meet so many different people, and because the program is well known, there [are] people from all over,” O'Brochta said.
Faculty mentorship also plays an important role in the student experience, with professors offering individualized guidance and feedback that encourages students to grow as writers and thinkers.
“I think what makes some of the professors here so special is the amount of time that they are willing to put into your work,” she said.
For O'Brochta, the program’s impact has extended beyond academics, helping her gain confidence in sharing her ideas and connecting with others through literature.
“At the University of Iowa, the passion for literature has driven me to feel confident in writing, sharing my writing, and reading, and talking to other writers in a way that I think will set me up for the rest of my life,” she said.
