Hi, I’m Marty Klein. I earned my MS in Statistics and Actuarial Science from Iowa and spent 40 years in financial services and insurance. Most recently, I served as CFO of Athene, helping lead its growth from a private startup through its IPO and eventual merger with Apollo. Today, I serve on corporate and nonprofit boards. 

Why CLAS? 

My career began with a strong quantitative foundation, but succeeding in increasingly complex leadership roles required much more than technical expertise. It meant learning how to analyze difficult problems, weigh competing considerations, communicate complex ideas clearly, and make sound decisions even when there wasn’t an obvious answer. 

Those abilities will become even more valuable as technology and AI change how technical work gets done. Expertise still matters, but future leaders will need to know how to interpret information, ask the right questions, exercise judgment, and communicate across disciplines. A liberal arts and sciences education develops that combination of analytical depth and intellectual breadth—and prepares graduates to keep adapting as their careers and industries change.
