Finding the right major can take time and a willingness to try something new. You can take courses for credit designed to explore majors and find what excites you.

Academic advising can help you

Academic Advising Center

If you are advised in the Academic Advising Center (AAC) start there. Your advisor knows the undergraduate majors offered at the University of Iowa and can also refer you to experts in the field. Students no longer advised by the Academic Advising Center are welcome to use its Advisor on Call service to discuss major exploration.

CLAS Advising

Students can also make an appointment with a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) advisor to discuss questions related to a possible new major. Advisors can review degree requirements, major requirements, time to graduation, as well as help you to consider your talents and your goals.

To make an appointment, visit MyUI and choose an individual appointment with "College Office" then "College of Liberal Arts and Sciences." From there, select "Major Exploration" as your reason and then the field of study you are interested in.

You will then be provided with options to meet with academic advisors in that area of study.

Did you know?

  • Seventy-five percent of all college students change their majors at least once during their college careers.
  • Students who choose majors that they love graduate with higher grade point averages.

Don't forget about career services

Additionally, the Pomerantz Career Center can help you explore majors. You can complete assessments to help determine majors that might be a great fit for you, and meet with a career coach to discuss professional paths for majors you are considering.
