Katie Markan, PhD
Katie is the academic advisor for the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department. She completed BA studies in Biology and Psychology as an undergraduate at Hope College before earning a PhD from the University of Chicago in Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition.
Katie has worked in biomedical research for over twenty years, most recently running her own lab at Washington University in St. Louis. Previously, she worked in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine as a postdoctoral fellow and faculty member. Throughout her tenure in biomedical research, she has always worked in the lab, side-by-side with undergraduates from all majors. She loves seeing students make connections between course material and what they are working on in the real world. Her strengths include real-world application of science, active listening and a caring, relatable personality which she brings to her position in academic advising.
Katie is a fanatic for all things sports but especially loves soccer, basketball and football. She enjoys being out of doors and reading stories about life and the wilderness (Harrison and Hemingway). She looks forward to working with you!
