It’s normal to feel a little sluggish when you return to campus after a long winter break—especially with the cold weather. But rather than focusing on the winter blues, think of it as an opportunity to try something new.

From warming up with a hot cup of coffee or tea to exploring campus, there are plenty of cozy ways to recharge, refresh, and set the tone for a successful spring semester.

Here are seven ideas to get you started.

Find your favorite coffee shop or new study spot

Escape the cold by studying in the numerous warm and cozy coffee shops scattered around Iowa City. It’s a good way to take a break from being on campus but still be productive. Some student-friendly spots for coffee and quiet time between classes include Java House, Coffee Emporium, and Prairie Lights. Many university buildings also feature shops.

Explore museums on campus

If it's your first year on campus, or even if you are a returning Hawkeye, visit the Pentacrest Museums and the Stanley Museum of Art to learn about Iowa history and to be inspired, while staying warm. Throughout the year, each museum hosts events to showcase various exhibits. The museums are free and open to the public.

Attend the Student Organization Fair

Students attend the students engagement fair

Looking to get involved? The student organization fair is a great way to interact with the over 100 clubs and organizations on campus. Finding a new hobby is a great way to stay busy and meet new friends.

The spring semester fair will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Iowa Memorial Union.

Start a new hobby or project

Winter is a great time to start something new indoors. Whether it's knitting, journaling, baking, or learning a new language, finding a creative outlet can keep your spirits high and help you stay engaged during the quieter winter months.

Plan an adventure for when the weather warms up

The weather might still be chilly, but there’s no harm in planning ahead. Research fun activities to do when the weather warms up — whether that’s exploring new hiking spots, planning a weekend trip, or exploring upcoming events in Iowa City. Having something to look forward to can make the colder months fly by.

Visit the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center

Group fitness class

Throughout the semester, the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center offers numerous fitness classes, including yoga, Pilates, strength training, HIIT and other workouts. Many of these classes are offered in group settings, which allows you to bring friends or meet new people while exercising.

If you are nervous about visiting the CRWC, these classes are a great way to familiarize yourself with the facilities. Recreational Services also offers intramural sports during the spring semester, which is another way to stay active and meet new people.

Try a unique academic experience or set new academic goals

If you’ve been interested in experiential learning, internships, study abroad, or leadership opportunities, your advisor can help. Schedule a meeting with your advisor early in the semester to discuss unique experiences, or if you have other academic questions or challenges. Your advisor will help you explore your academic goals and how to achieve them.
