University of Iowa alumnus John F. Allen turned his lifelong love of music into transformational support for the Hawkeye Marching Band. After witnessing the band’s dedication and lack of compensation, Allen funded new instruments and created the John F. Allen Appreciation Awards, providing annual monetary awards to all 295 members. His $100,000 yearly gift has significantly increased band retention, auditions, and performance strength.

In the three years since the first round of awards, Bush says band member retention has increased by about 21%, and turnout for auditions has increased by nearly 50%.
