The American Catholic Historical Association has recognized Kristy Nabhan-Warren with its 2023- Distinguished Teaching Award.  

Nabhan-Warren is Associate Vice President for Research and is Professor and V.O. and Elizabeth Kahl Figge Chair of Catholic Studies, in the Departments of Religious Studies, Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies, and History. 

“It [the award] means a lot to me because mentoring younger scholars has been important to me throughout my career,” Nabhan-Warren says. “To learn that I am recognized as a leader and as a mentor for younger colleagues . . . It's very humbling.”  

Nabhan-Warren has transitioned out of teaching and is currently serving in a relatively new role in the UI as an Associate Vice President of Research. She says she uses her teaching and mentoring skills in this setting.  

“I tend to be in a room with a lot of scientists. So, I'm learning a lot from them while bringing in my skills as a teacher and as a mentor by asking questions in the meetings I'm in now,” Nabhan-Warren explains. 

Brenna More, President of the American Catholic Historical Association says it is especially meaningful that the committee selected Nabhan-Warren.  

“I know how creatively and generously you [Nabhan-Warren] have supported younger scholars and worked to stretch our understanding of classroom education, research, and scholarly life to be more capacious and inclusive,” Moore said in an email. “Your work in community-engaged learning with undergraduates, as a dedicated advocate for your doctoral students, and as a mentor for emerging scholars in your NYC book series, are only some examples of your generosity and care.” 

The American Catholic Association began bestowing this award in 2010. Nabhan-Warren will be recognized during a celebratory event in Philadelphia in January.
