Title: “Local Reference Data for Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Assessment: Insights from Kosovo”
Speaker: Charlotte Hilker, MA, CF-SLP; Dr. Philip Combiths, PhD, CCC-SLP, University of Iowa Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders
Children with unique linguistic backgrounds are not served by the current state of language assessment that often relies on standardized tests scored against large normative samples that, by their very nature, best represent the prevailing majoritized group. Local community norming could offer a realistic solution to this critical representation challenge in language assessment. Using a case study of a local community norming project in Prishtina, Kosovo, we discuss how local normative data can be used realistically to improve assessment of language disorders. We will provide practical steps for gathering and utilizing norms in appropriate communities.
