Bringing our academic resources in the areas of the environment and sustainability together to focus on some of the most important grand challenges of the 21st century.
To build on and strengthen the areas of climate, environmental, and sustainability science and policy at the University of Iowa, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) will combine the current departments of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences and Earth and Environmental Sciences, along with the Environmental Sciences program, in a new School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability. The school will strategically build environmental work as a core pillar of the college, grow collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and increase student access to the wide range of career paths in these areas.
Three majors; seven tracks; endless possibilities.
The School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability is the place for you to discover how you want to study these topics–and the type of career you want to pursue. From working in a lab to drafting policy, you’ll find your place here.
Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES)
Do you wonder how Earth and other planets work? Want to help society address environmental challenges like a changing climate and preserving safe drinking water?
The EES major trains students to use an integrated approach to understand the natural world.
Geographical and Sustainability Sciences (GSS)
Are you curious how the decisions about land and resource use affect the natural environment? Want to help build a more sustainable world for the future?
The GSS major uses an integrative curriculum across disciplines to help you understand the complex processes that connect us to natural systems.
Environmental Policy & Planning (EPPL)
Are you committed to environmental protection and stewardship? Might you consider a career in environmental law?
The interdisciplinary EPPL major trains students to tackle environmental problems through action, advocacy, and compliance.
Many of society's largest environmental challenges will require working across disciplines to solve. The education offered in the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability will prepare you to tackle these challenges through our majors, minors, and certificates.
