Classroom Health and Safety: Quick Guide for Students

Feeling sick? Have Symptoms of COVID-19? Take these steps!
  1. Self-report via the University's online system using this link and monitor your email for additional instructions.
  2. Do not go to class. If you develop symptoms while in class or on campus, return to your dorm, apartment, or other living space and self-isolated.
  3. Email your instructors and tell them you need to be absent. If possible, try to keep up with homework and assignments; you may be able to attend class through Zoom.
  4. Call a healthcare professional who can assess your symptoms and help you to make a plan. Here are some options for providers: UI Student Health Nurseline (319-335-9704); email them at student-health@uiowa.edu; or schedule a video visit through MyChart. Please visit this website for additional information. You may also call the UI Hospitals and Clinics at 319-384-8442 which answers calls 24/7. 
  5. Remember, do not walk into QuickCare, Student Health, a UI Health Care clinic, or an emergency room for test. Call ahead!
  6. Continue to self-isolate until your health care provider says you may return to a normal routine. The self-report will be copied to your instructor and will serve as documentation for your absence.
  7. If you are tested and the results are positive, see the steps below.
If you test positive or have a known exposure, take these steps:
  1. Self-report via the University's online system using this link and monitor your email for additional instructions.
  2. Your instructors will be a copied on the UI self-reporting form, and this will count as medical documentation for your absence. You might be able to attend class via Zoom.
  3. If you live on campus, call University Housing & Dining as soon as possible (319-335-3000) so they can assist you with appropriate living arrangements while you are quarantined.
  4. Let your professors know you are absent and when you hope to return! If you feel able to work, try to keep up with your studies and complete homework and other assignments. Your instructors will be a copied on the UI self-reporting form, and this will count as medical documentation for your absence. You might be able to attend class via Zoom. Ask!
  5. If you have questions or need help, call your healthcare provider.
