Please keep in mind as we approach the flu season and the end of the semester that instructors who must miss a class are required to make “provision for course coverage, TA supervision, and advising during the instructor’s absence”: https://clas.uiowa.edu/faculty/professional-policies-faculty-responsibilities-basic-expectations-faculty-position.

This CLAS requirement is based on the UI Operation Manual policy, section 15.2: “The faculty member has the responsibility to meet classes as scheduled and, when circumstances prevent this, to arrange equivalent alternate instruction” (https://opsmanual.uiowa.edu/human-resources/professional-ethics-and-academic-responsibility).

Many faculty work in teams to help each other during an unexpected absence or because of a need to be out of town.

Additionally, some student service offices are happy to make a classroom presentation if scheduled in advance. For example, the Career Center is always hoping to find ways to connect with students and is willing to do a presentation if the request is submitted two or three weeks before the date needed. Please see the list of topics offered by the Career Center and the related form at this link: https://careers.uiowa.edu/faculty/request-presentation-or-workshop.

Thank you for helping our students and each other as we come to the swift end of the semester.
