RE: CLAS Online Course Return Policy
CLAS Online Course Return Policy
The new policy will take effect 1 August 2016. The key elements of the policy are:
- Departments will earn $65 per SCH. This value represents an approximate 50/50 split between the College and each unit, after instructional expenses are covered.
- A minimum class size of 16 must be met before proceeds are earned.
- Enrollments will be counted double for any course number ≥ 5000.
- The previously existing cap on potential earnings for each course has been removed.
- It is preferred that classes be taught on-load or by Lecturers, though tenured faculty can teach overload courses during the academic year, and they are also eligible for summer appointments.
- There is a limit on the number of online courses tenure-track faculty will be allowed to teach:
- A maximum of one class each academic year (does not include summer);
- Two classes may be taught with special permission from Dean Curto.
It is also important to note that:
- The policy will be re-examined on a yearly basis to determine if adjustments are needed.
- Departments will no longer assume the risk of not earning tuition for online on-campus students who have met the tuition cap – this burden will be assumed by the College.
- A pilot program will be implemented as a way to achieve and maintain a balance between online and face-to-face instruction. In this program, each unit will have an on-campus SCH baseline established and online proceeds for a department will be adjusted twice each year based on the change in total SCH production compared to the department’s base.
