Re:       Seeking Nominations for Dean’s Achievement Awards

This spring the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will select two eligible graduating students to receive “Dean’s Achievement Awards.”  In order to be eligible, students must be eligible for services from Center for Diversity and Enrichment (CDE).  Students who graduated December 2016, or who will graduate May or July 2017, are eligible for nomination.  The awards will be made at the Center for Diversity & Enrichment Graduation Reception on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm in the Main Ballroom, Iowa Memorial Union.

The College looks upon the nomination process as an opportunity for individual faculty who teach, advise, and often mentor students in the major department to indicate students they consider deserving of special awards and recognition.  This is our practice, for example, with nominations for the Hancher-Finkbine Medallion.  There is no obligation for faculty to forward a nomination if they do not know the student/the student’s work or feel that such recognition is not warranted.

The selection committee is particularly interested in the student’s academic accomplishments within and beyond the major; special honors, scholarships; activities and volunteering (on and off campus).  In many cases, information about activities and volunteering is provided by the student in a résumé.

The names and UI email addresses of your currently enrolled CLAS students who are CDE clients will be sent to you in a separate email. Please note that they should also have a minimum 3.3 University of Iowa and Cumulative grade point average. Although all will have completed 120 semester hours by May or July 2017, we ask for your help in verifying with the student whether he/she is planning to graduate at that time.

If you choose to nominate a student for this award, please solicit a résumé from your nomineeSend the student’s resume and your letter of support to Jason C. Wiegand (jason-wiegand@uiowa.edu ), Academic Programs and Student Development, 120 Schaeffer Hall, by Tuesday, April 4, 2017Résumés and letters may be sent as email attachments or via campus mail.

Thank you for your support in celebrating the achievements of our students.
