RE:             Reminder of CLAS General Education Changes for Summer 2017 and Call for

                   Diversity and Inclusion Proposals

As you will remember, CLAS undergraduates entering the University of Iowa during and after the summer of 2017 will be held to two new General Education requirements.

  • The current Values, Society, and Diversity (3 s.h.) CLAS GE Area will be split into the two areas of Values and Culture (3 s.h.) and Diversity and Inclusion (3 s.h.), adding 3 s.h. to the CLAS GE requirements.
  • Transfer credit will not be accepted by CLAS for the Diversity and Inclusion requirement.
  • Continuing CLAS students will complete the requirements in place when they entered UI, as noted on the student’s degree audit.

We anticipate that the MyUI schedule of courses will show the new GE status for approved courses in Values and Culture and in Diversity and Inclusion sometime after the Early Registration (ER) period for Fall 2017 but before new transfer or first-year students register for Fall 2017.

We are now in the process of updating the CLAS website and hope to have this finished by the end of ER.

Additionally, the new General Catalog for 2017-2018 will contain these changes along with a list of courses approved in each area of the CLAS General Education Program. A new edition of the Catalog is generally published each year around June 1. The degree audits for new CLAS students will also reflect these changes.

  • Thank you for updating any websites or materials from your area that may refer to CLAS GE requirements.
  • Proposals for new courses for GE status in Diversity and Inclusion are welcomed. Please see this page for more information and for the proposal requirements.

We appreciate you forwarding this memo to those in your office who might need this information.  If you have questions, please do let me know or feel free to contact Kathryn Hall in my office. Thank you.
