As a reminder, the University of Iowa and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences require that every organized course has a syllabus.

  • DEOs must review all syllabi to ensure compliance with UI and CLAS policies.
  • This review should be completed before the start of the semester so corrections may be made.
  • Syllabi should be available to students on the course ICON site at the first-class meeting or otherwise given to students by that date.

CLAS Syllabus Insert

All UI and CLAS information listed at this link (see https://clas.uiowa.edu/faculty/required-syllabus-and-syllabus-insert) must appear on every syllabus.

Most faculty add this information by attaching this insert at the end of the syllabus.

New students especially find the syllabus confusing, and do not realize its importance; we very much appreciate you taking the time to explain to your class why the syllabus is important and how students use it.

Please also discuss the importance of the syllabus insert with students on the first day of class since students can benefit from knowing this information, which includes the absence policy related to military obligations, for example, or the consequences for sharing class recordings. Faculty will also find this information useful.

Any questions related to the undergraduate syllabus or its insert should be referred to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education; for questions related to graduate courses, please contact the Associate Dean for Graduate Education.

We are always happy to answer your questions and to learn about your concerns. Thank you for staying in touch.
