Please remember the policy below on how to handle conflicts when giving exams and quizzes outside of the regularly scheduled class time.

Note that a student’s need to take a make-up quiz or exam outside of class does not constitute an excuse for a student to miss a regularly scheduled class.

  • During the semester, a regularly scheduled course takes precedence over quizzes and exams scheduled outside of a regular class time.
  • Please remind all students of this policy. It is the student’s responsibility to attend the regularly scheduled class and to communicate scheduling conflicts with the instructor who is offering a quiz or exam outside of the regularly scheduled class time.

Midterm or During Term Course Exam Conflict Policy

This information is from the Registrar’s web site: https://registrar.uiowa.edu/midterm-exam-policies

  1. When there is a conflict between a midterm [or quiz] scheduled outside of regular class time and a regularly scheduled course, the regularly scheduled course will take precedence.
  2. When there is a conflict between an exam [or quiz] scheduled outside of class time and other scheduled and required course activities (e.g., performances, meetings, lectures), the required course activity will take precedence.
  3. When there is a conflict between an exam [or quiz] scheduled outside of class time and other scheduled, non-required course activities or personal obligations, the exam [or quiz] will take precedence. However, exams [or quizzes] not scheduled and announced in class at least 14 days in advance will not have priority under this policy.
  4. When there is a conflict between two or more exams [or quizzes] scheduled outside their regular class times, makeup exams [or quizzes] should be assigned according to the following precedence rules using the new subject course numbering system.
    1. During FALL semesters, courses having lower subject alpha characters or lower course numbers when the conflict is within a subject will take precedence. If the conflict is within the same subject and course then the lower section number will take precedence.
    2. During SPRING semesters, courses having higher subject alpha characters or higher course numbers when the conflict is within a subject will take precedence. If the conflict is within the same subject and course then the higher section number will take precedence.
