As a reminder, the University of Iowa and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences require that every organized course has a syllabus.

  • DEOs must review all syllabi to ensure compliance with UI and CLAS policies.
  • This review should be completed before the start of the semester so corrections may be made.
  • Syllabi should be available to students on the course ICON site at the first-class meeting or otherwise given to students by that date.

CLAS Syllabus Insert

All UI and CLAS information listed at this link (see https://clas.uiowa.edu/faculty/required-syllabus-and-syllabus-insert) must appear on every syllabus.

Most faculty add this information by attaching this insert at the end of the syllabus.

Best Practices

Instructors of undergraduate courses, in particular, should take time during the first week of class (and perhaps again closer to mid-semester), to review all course details in the syllabus, explaining to the class how to use the syllabus and how the syllabus has been set up to support their learning.

It is critical that the syllabus clearly provide an explanation of attendance policies, including what students should do if they will be absent from class. Whenever possible, please build in flexibility to attendance and participation policies. In addition, if exams are to be given, please provide students with clear guidelines on make-up exam availability and policies around missed exams. For more information on what information is required to be on the syllabus see this link.

On-campus Exam Resources

The North Campus Test Center (NCTC) is a 48-seat test center administered by Distance and Online Education (DOE) Exam Services that offers proctoring services for UI faculty and students. While some student accommodations (denoted by an asterisk on students’ Letters of Accommodation) can be fulfilled at SDS, many accommodations can be fulfilled at the NCTC.

Accommodations that can be fulfilled at the test center are listed on students’ Letters of Accommodation without an asterisk.

Faculty can schedule student exams at the North Campus Test Center (NCTC) from the Proctored Exam Portal, available in ICON. Here are step-by-step instructions to add the Proctored Exams Portal to your ICON site and request an individual proctored exam for a student. Please contact doe-exams@uiowa.edu; 319-384-4800 if you have questions about enabling or using the portal.

Any questions related to the undergraduate syllabus or its insert should be referred to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education; for questions related to graduate courses, please contact the Associate Dean for Graduate Education.

We are always happy to answer your questions and to learn about your concerns. Thank you for staying in touch.
