Please remember to report academic misconduct; your reports help to stop cheating, with word quickly passing from student to student that misconduct has consequences. This also helps to protect the integrity of your classroom.

More information for faculty is summarized below and at this site.

Information on the undergraduate CLAS Code of Academic Honesty is on this page and can be useful when talking with undergraduates about academic misconduct. Some faculty ask students to sign the Code before taking a major exam or turning in a final report or project.

Procedures for Reporting Misconduct

  1. Be sure to first email the student about the problem at the uiowa.edu address.
  2. Meet with the student if at all possible to discuss the situation. At the end of the semester, this can be difficult; if there is no response to your email, please move to step 3.
  3. Use this online form to report the incident to the College. Upload any documentation to the form that you might have. Please include your name on the form so we can copy you on our response to the student.

Sanctions from the Instructor

Instructors apply the first level of sanctions for misconduct, which often includes a 0 or F or for the related work and the report sent to the College. Instructors wishing to apply additional or other sanctions should first consult with the College.

Sanctions from the College

  • For a first offense, students must complete an academic integrity seminar; the seminar costs $100 and takes around 18 hours to complete. The student may also be asked to discuss their seminar work with us.
  • A hold is put on the student’s future registration until the seminar is completed.
  • For a second offense (or an egregious first offense), a student is suspended for one academic year.
  • For a third offense (or for a very egregious first offense), a student is expelled.

More information on the CLAS policy and procedures related to academic misconduct can be found on this page.

Thank you.
