As the fall semester comes to a close, please remember to report academic undergraduate misconduct as soon as possible, using the procedures below.

CLAS expects all undergraduate students to abide by the Code of Academic Honesty. Examples of student behaviors that constitute academic misconduct include the following: cheating on exams and quizzes, plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration on assignments, assessments or other activities, willful misrepresentation, and facilitating academic misconduct of other students.

If you find a student has participated in any academic misconduct, please follow these steps:

  1. Email the student about the problem at the uiowa.edu address to inform them of the situation. We encourage you to meet with the student, if possible, as it provides valuable information during review. Teaching Assistants should first confer with the course supervisor.
  2. Use the online form to report the incident to CLAS. Be sure to include the grade you are assigning related to this event and any communication you may have had with the student.
  3. Upload any documentation to the form that you might have, such as a Turnitin report or your comparison of two exams where students may have collaborated.
  4. Please include your name on the form so we can copy you on our response to the student. Add your supervisor’s name and email address so this person can be included in the letter from CLAS.
  5. CLAS will send a letter to the student that includes your sanction (penalty) and the collegiate one; for information on the collegiate sanction, see below.
  6. There have been a large number of reports this semester; please give CLAS around two weeks to respond.

What sanction (penalty) should the instructor give?
Instructors generally reduce the grade for the assignment in question, giving a 0 or an F. Some instructors allow a resubmission of the work in question while others do not; this is up to the instructor and depends on the student’s work in the course and other factors, such as the seriousness of the offense.

What sanction does CLAS apply?
In addition to the lowered grade, CLAS administers a second-level sanction that depends on the number of incidents reported previously for a student.

  • For a first offense, students must complete an online academic integrity seminar, the AIS. The seminar costs the student $100 and takes around 18 hours to complete. A hold is put on the student’s future registration until the seminar is completed.
  • We often meet with students during this process and stress the importance of trust and integrity within the UI community.
  • For a second offense (or an egregious first offense), a student is suspended for one year. The offense appears on the transcript during the suspension and is then removed.
  • For a third offense (or for a very egregious first offense), a student is expelled. The notation remains permanently on the student transcript.

Please see the CLAS Undergraduate Academic Misconduct page for more information, including the student’s appeal process. Thank you for your help. Please contact amy-korthank@uiowa.edu with questions.
