RE: New Procedural Requirement: Attachment of Syllabi to MyUI

Starting with Spring 2018, each undergraduate course on the MyUI schedule must have the syllabus attached before Early Registration begins for the next semester.

  • For Spring 2018, syllabi should be added by November 1, 2017.
  • The Offerings Planner should be used for this purpose so that only those with a HawkID and a password can access a syllabus.

Because of this early posting date, some syllabi will need to be revised before the course is taught.  A disclaimer should be added by the instructor at the top of the first page of the syllabus, with the following wording suggested: This syllabus is subject to change; the final version will be made available for enrolled students at the start of the semester.

We have conferred with the UI Office of General Counsel about this matter, and we have been assured that this request is legally appropriate.

Rationale
CLAS undergraduates have repeatedly asked that students have access to syllabi before enrolling in courses.  Likewise, faculty have the right to expect students to be committed to their courses, with this commitment fostered by students’ better understanding of course content and requirements as described in the syllabus.

We hope sharing syllabi before the Early Registration period helps students to choose their courses wisely while creating a more stable classroom for instructors.

We appreciate your time and help with this new procedure. Please let me know what concerns or questions that you might have.

Thank you.
