Requests for Final Exam scheduling needs are due to the Registrar’s Office by August 16, 2023. See this message from the Registrar’s Office for details.

In Spring 2023 UEPCC discussed final exam policies for CLAS undergraduate courses. Please review these policies, including the updates below.

The final exam policies are in effect for Fall 2023.

Modality of Final Exams

If a final exam will be given in an in-person course, the modality of the exam should also be in person. CLAS does not support changes to the modality of a final exam from in-person to online. Changes of this nature can cause confusion for students, and issues related to the need for access to technology and internet arise. In addition, the use of online resources can contribute to academic misconduct during exams.

If an emergency arises and the instructor is unable to attend their final exam time and place, instructors should work with the department to find a solution. If the only solution is to offer the exam online, they should contact the DEO and Associate Dean Lang for permission for the final exam to have its modality changed. It is important that CLAS UP staff be aware of any changes to modalities to help when students share concerns.

Final Exam Review Period

Each fall and spring semester, the Office of the Registrar asks instructors to review a draft of the final exam schedule before it is published. The schedule works to minimize student conflicts, and the review period is important so that students receive accurate information. Final exam review is also important for SDS accommodations and for allowing students to make travel plans at the end of the semester. Changes made at the last minute are challenging for students.

The faculty review period for Fall 2023 is Sept. 8–13, 2023.

Changes After the Final Exam Schedule is Published

Once the Final Exam Schedule is released to students (September 18 for Fall 2023), making changes is challenging and not guaranteed. If changes are needed, they should be requested right away. Changes to undergraduate final exam times, places, and modalities now require approval from the DEO and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education.

A Reminder about Midterm Exams

Most midterm exams can be and are given during the regularly scheduled class time (i.e., “during class midterm exams”). Instructors who would like a larger room or additional rooms for exams scheduled during the regular class time can make a request through Classroom Scheduling in the Office of the Registrar by submitting the Room Request Form.
