We are pleased to announce that Kaltura is coming to the University of Iowa to serve as our Digital Media Platform. Kaltura is replacing ShareStream and the various other streaming media servers to provide a more robust and easy-to-use system.

Kaltura will be available in ICON later this spring for all faculty, staff, and students.

Over the next several months, the public-facing MediaSpace (https://mediaspace.uiowa.edu/) part of Kaltura will become available for use.

  • Kaltura will automatically generate mechanical captions for all videos.
  • This means content creators should be sure review captions for content and clarity after uploading their videos.

With this change, we would like to take a moment to reiterate the University's accessibility guidelines for both internal and public facing media (see https://webaccess.its.uiowa.edu/captioning/captioning-faq.html for more details).

Additionally, while Kaltura is approved for FERPA protected data, it is not approved for HIPAA protected data. We will be adding reminders to users about this on the upload screen in Kaltura.

We would like to thank the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, the Tippie College of Business, Distance and Online Education, and the University Libraries for partnering with Information Technology Services (ITS) and the Office of Teaching, Learning & Technology to make this possible.
