We're Hiring! Tenure-Track Assistant Professor specializing in Geographic Information Science!

Requesition #: 73766

The Department of Geographical & Sustainability Sciences (GSS) at the University of Iowa seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor whose work is at the forefront of geographic information science. Relevant research topics might include, but are not limited to, spatial data science, simulation modeling, machine learning, GeoAI, remote or in situ sensing technologies, and big spatiotemporal data analytics.

We seek candidates who can contribute to and expand upon the department’s efforts to provide leadership at the campus and national level in emerging areas of geographic information and spatial data science. Interdisciplinary science is at the core of the college’s and university’s mission and the department has helped build strong collaborative, interdisciplinary research programs in informatics, public health, sustainability, and environmental change across campus and nationally.  We seek candidates who will be excited by the opportunity to apply their unique expertise to complex socio-environmental problems broadly defined as part of interdisciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will contribute to a broad-based GIScience curriculum. The ability to offer courses at the intersection of spatial data science and existing departmental strengths is desirable (e.g., sustainability, physical geography, health geography, natural hazards and remote sensing).

Education Requirement:

Ph.D. in geography or a related discipline in hand by the start date.

Required Qualifications:

Expertise in a desired topic area of spatial data science/GIScience including but not limited to artificial intelligence for geographic knowledge discovery (GeoAI), machine learning, spatial simulation and modeling, spatial data analytics.

Active research program in geographic information science as evidenced by relevant publications in academic journals.

Ability to teach courses in the GIScience curriculum: Digital Earth, Foundations of GIS, spatial data science, and geospatial programming, as demonstrated in graduate-level course work, research and/or teaching experience.
