Canada Research Chair - University of British Columbia

Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in the UBC Department of Geography - Geographical Information Science and Human Geography
The Department of Geography at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver
campus invites applications for the position of Canada Research Chair (Tier II) with a
specialization in geographical information science (GIS), to enhance existing departmental
strengths in human geography. The Chair position is expected to be a full-time tenurestream
appointment made at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful applicant will
have a Ph.D. degree (or provide evidence of imminent completion) and will be an
emerging scholar who is active in their field of research and whose profile and research
proposal demonstrate an excellent fit with CRC program criteria and the aims of the
position. The Chair will be expected to maintain an outstanding program of research, to
teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to supervise undergraduates, graduate
students, and postdoctoral fellows, and to contribute to service at the departmental level
and beyond.

We seek a scholar positioned at the intersection between a) emerging questions of
nature, society, and the politics of knowledge production, and b) transformative methods
in GIS. The individual should be actively contributing to one of the core fields of human
geography (cultural, economic, environmental, political, social, urban), and their
scholarship should emphasize that GIS, as a methodology and technology, is embedded
within broader social processes. The ideal candidate will have initiated a highly successful
program of research and be able to demonstrate excellent teaching effectiveness in one
or more of the following areas: techniques in human geography; GIS and society; analysis
of 'big data'; cartography and data visualization; digital humanities; GIS and citizen
science; and spatial statistics.

The Canada Research Chairs Program supports outstanding researchers in areas that will
further UBC's strategic research plan. All Chair nominations are subject to review and
final approval by the CRC Secretariat. To meet the criteria of the CRC program, Tier II
nominees must: be excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated
particular research creativity; have demonstrated the potential to achieve international
recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; as chairholders, have the potential
Department of Geography to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and be
proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality.

Nominees for Tier II positions are intended for exceptional emerging scholars, normally
within 10 years of having earned their highest degree. Please consult the Canada
Research Chairs website for full program information, including further details on
eligibility criteria: www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca and http://www.chairschaires.
