In this lecture, poet, fiction writer, playwright, and artist Nao will discuss the art of discipline. What is it? And how does a writer traditionally and nontraditionally define it? The discussion will encompass various emotional and psychic strategies aimed at advancing one’s authority, autonomy, and regimen when creating pieces of writing. Nao will also provide examples of disciplinary methods that impair healthy conditions and the desire for creativity, and will offer advice on how to avoid these pitfalls.

Vi Khi Nao is known for her work spanning poetry, fiction, plays, film, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Her new novel, The Italy Letters, will be published by Melville House in 2024. A former Black Mountain Institute fellow, she received the Jim Duggins Outstanding Mid-Career Novelist Prize in 2022. www.vikhinao.com
