Sunday With the Docents: Weird Science

Sunday, June 23, 2024 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Alchemistic Egg by Ellen Lanyon
Stanley Museum of Art

Join us at the Stanley Museum of Art on June 23 for our second Sundays with the Docents tour where Stanley docents create unique tours to share with our audiences throughout the year.

Weird Science will be led by Docent Mary Blackwood who will explore how artists have been influenced by the culture, knowledge, and politics of the societies in which they live and work. Through the Stanley's collections, visitors will discover whether artists incorporate science in their art subconsciously or intentionally and will examine where art intersects with science, industrial design, strange world-building, science fiction, and early robots.

This tour is part of the Sundays with the Docents program. Walk-ins are welcome on the tour, but using the sign up is strongly recommended as tours are capped at 20 participants. Reserve your spot here.

Formerly a student at the University of California, San Diego, Mary Blackwood had the incredible fortune to take classes from Faith Ringgold, Manny Farber, Babette Mangolte, Moira Roth, and Louis Hock. Mary’s philosophy of the art world expanded enormously while enrolled at The University of California, and she has carried that philosophy with her ever since. She became a docent at The Stanley in 2023 and enjoys leading tours for museum visitors of all ages and levels of artistic knowledge, passing along that philosophy to a new audience.
