First-Year Seminar proposals will be accepted for Fall 2016 from Tuesday, December 1, 2015 through Monday, February 1, 2016.

Please consider submitting a proposal for this program.

First-Year Seminars introduce entering students to the intellectual life of the University of Iowa, helping students to make the transition to college-level learning.

Students earn one semester hour for completing a FYS, with courses meeting for a total of 750 minutes during the semester. FYS may be offered as off-cycle courses but must begin with the start of the semester, meeting for minimum of 8 weeks and a maximum of 15 weeks.

Coursework should include class participation, writing assignments, and presentations, but no quizzes or exams. FYS focus on active and interactive learning.

Proposals should be designed with the above outcomes and requirements in mind. Please note these other important points:

  • All proposals must use the online submission form. The site will not accept proposals until December 1. Once the site is available, Angie Lamb, the FYS coordinator in the Office of the Provost, will let us know or you may visit this page for information.
  • The proposal deadline is February 1, 2016, but we encourage early submissions since funding is limited.
  • If a proposal was approved in a previous year, it must be resubmitted and approved for Fall 2016.
  • A brief syllabus is required with the proposal.
  • All proposals require the approval of the Chair before submission.
  • A proposal for Honors or for any other college or program other than CLAS (i.e. through your department) must have the approval of that unit, with the proposal submitted through that program and not through CLAS. Contact the program directly to discuss this matter.
  • Please review the CLAS guidelines for appropriate FYS offerings before submitting a proposal.
  • Please also visit this site for additional information.

The FYS Program is a joint project of the Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education and University College, CLAS, other UI Colleges, and the Honors Program, with funding provided by the Office of the Provost. If you have administrative questions, please contact Angie Lamb. If you have questions about the content of your proposed FYS, please contact me.

We appreciate your participation in this important program.

Thank you.
