This spring the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will make two “Dean’s Achievement Awards” to graduating students who are clients of the Center for Diversity and Enrichment (CDE).  Students who graduated December 2015, or who will graduate May or July 2016, are eligible for nomination.  The awards will be made at the Center for Diversity & Enrichment Graduation Reception on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm in the Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union.

The College looks upon the nomination process as an opportunity for individual faculty who teach, advise, and often mentor students in the major department to indicate students they consider deserving of special awards and recognition.  This is our practice, for example, with nominations for the Hancher-Finkbine Medallion.  There is no obligation for faculty to forward a nomination if they do not know the student/the student’s work or feel that such recognition is not warranted.

The selection committee is particularly interested in the student’s academic accomplishments within and beyond the major; special honors, scholarships; activities and volunteering (on and off campus).  In many cases, information about activities and volunteering is provided by the student in a résumé.

I previously provided the names and UI email addresses of your currently enrolled CLAS students who are CDE clients and who have minimum 3.3 University of Iowa and cumulative grade point averages.  (Although all will have completed 120 semester hours by May or July 2016, we ask for your help in verifying with the student whether he/she is planning to graduate at that time.)

If you choose to nominate a student for this award, please solicit a résumé from your nomineeSend the student’s résumé and your letter of support to Tyra Nelson (tyra-nelson@uiowa.edu ), Academic Programs and Student Development, 120 Schaeffer Hall, by Friday, March 25, 2016Résumés and letters may be sent as email attachments or via campus mail.

Thanks for your help with this.
