Mindful of current circumstances, the College estimates that fewer than 10 faculty searches can be approved for the 2016-17 academic year.   Therefore, as an exception for this year only, the College has decided to concentrate on reinforcing existing clusters.  We recognize that unexpected or special circumstances may require a search outside of the identified clusters.

The seven clusters identified by the Provost’s Office are as follows:

Please use the above hyperlinks to review information about each cluster and cluster hires.   Proposals should reflect careful discussion within the department and, where appropriate, with other CLAS and UI units, as well as cluster leaders.  Proposals that demonstrate strong connections across units including joint hires or an intersection between clusters are especially encouraged.

Requests are due to the College by March 14, 2016.  Only one proposal per department will be accepted (this includes joint proposals).  Please submit (using an 11-point font size) the following materials as outlined below for discussion by the Executive Committee and the CLAS deans:

1.  Departmental Overview (two pages maximum).  This document should include the following sections:

  • Research profile.  A summary of recent/ongoing departmental scholarly/creative work;
  • Recent progress.  A summary of recent progress, accomplishments, or initiatives;
  • Interdisciplinary connections.  A section on how the hiring plan promotes existing or new interdisciplinary interactions, with a list of faculty/units that have had input on the hiring plan;
  • Hiring plan.  A summary on how this cluster hire fits within your three-to-five-year faculty-hiring plan.

2.  Search Proposal. Two-to-three pages maximum.  Each proposal should contain a position description and a rationale for the request. Each proposal must be submitted using the current CLAS online form (see the form linked here), which contains the following sections:

  • Title of search requested,
  • Rank requested (a justification is required for a rank other than assistant professor),
  • Position description,
  • Intellectual impact,
  • Impact on cluster area(s),
  • Impact on the undergraduate program and curriculum,
  • Impact on the graduate program and curriculum, and
  • Broader impact (e.g., through dissemination/application of knowledge; through public engagement or outreach; through broader participation of underrepresented groups; or through other ways of benefitting the public).

For each position requested in 2016-17, identify an office and (if applicable) lab space and any start-up or renovation needs.  Use the excel forms available here: one is for the sciences and other departments where start-up is negotiated, and one tab is for the arts, humanities and other departments with standard start-up.

Submissions will be in a single bookmarked pdf for each unit requesting new faculty lines, which may include brief letters of support from other departments/colleges in an attached appendix.  Proposals will be submitted using the CLAS Allocation Request System within MAX 2.0.  (Please remember that when you complete the allocation request, you must select AY 2017-18, as this is when the line will be filled.)  The department profile reports to be used when making new faculty line requests are located in: N:\_Accounting\(Dept Name)\2014-2015 CLAS Reports\(Dept # and Name) Dept Profile.pdf.  The FTE Reports are located in: N:\_Accounting\(Dept Name)\FTE Summary\Department FTE 16-17.pdf.

Please address any questions about this call for proposals to Dian Gottlob, Office of the Dean (335-2627 or dian-gottlob@uiowa.edu).
