SJMC Ambassador Spotlight
Maddie Huntley (B.A journalism and mass communications, marketing ‘22) always knew she wanted to go into public relations, but her goal as a first year student was to find what would get her there.
In high school, Maddie wrote for her school’s newspaper and yearbook. She had a passion for writing and loved telling stories. She got a sneak peak into her dream job as a senior in high school when she interned with UnityPoint Health - Des Moines in their public relations department.
“I want students to understand that just because they are journalism majors doesn’t mean they have to be a reporter or editor,” Maddie shares. “I hope everyone finds their passion like I did. Iowa SJMC has helped me find the right classes and tools I need to go beyond the classroom.”
Iowa’s journalism school requires students to have a second area of study. Because of this unique requirement, Maddie has chosen to take on a second major of marketing.
“I knew it would be hard to double major, but the journalism school has given me the confidence and flexibility to complete both majors in four years,” Maddie says.
In just her first two semesters, Maddie has seen all that Iowa has to offer her. Maddie got involved in Dance Marathon, greek life and works as a communications assistant for Paul Jensen in the journalism school. With her involvement in student organizations, she has gained significant leadership experience that has helped her land a leadership role in her sorority as the external public relations blog chair. No matter what hat she is wearing, she finds a way to write and share stories.
To future Hawkeyes, Maddie says, “The connections and real world, professional experiences I have gained are invaluable. I encourage all students to get involved their first semester on campus because the opportunities are endless. Find your passion and be involved!”
