The Department of Cinematic Arts approaches film from a critical and creative perspective, in relation to the other arts, and within an international and interdisciplinary frame. It provides students with the critical tools necessary for the theoretical and historical analysis of cinema as well as the creative skills required for the production of film, video, and digital media.

The Department of Cinematic Arts is pleased to announce the first screening of Film Club for the Fall Semester.  Film Club is a 1-credit course for students, but is also open to the general public. The theme for this semester's screening series is British genre cinema from 1945 to the present. The first selection of screenings is on British comedy,  and the inaugural film is the classic dark comedy from Ealing studios: Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949). On Friday, September 27, from 4:00–5:30 p.m. at the Iowa City Public Library (Room A), the Obermann Center will host a Humanities Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, especially designed to feature the work of UI humanities graduate students.
