NOTE: To accommodate as many students as possible and discourage last minute cancellations, the Speaking Center has instituted a 24 hour cancellation policy. Students who don't show up for scheduled appointments will be asked to wait until next semester to use our services again. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Speaking Center’s General Mission:
The Speaking Center, housed in the Rhetoric Department in Rooms 410, 412, and 414 EPB, offers quality, one-on-one and small group tutoring and consultation to students and instructors on campus who would like to work on any aspect of oral communication. We work with a range of students from many disciplines on such issues as: effective participation in class discussions, crafting and delivering oral presentations, understanding unfamiliar cultural references, interview skills, creative performances, and speech anxiety. We also work with instructors on: crafting clear assignments, fostering classroom presence, ensuring that all students can access their reading assignments, going on the job market, and delivering poster and conference presentations.
Each semester we have the good fortune to tutor many international students and instructors who have met our ESL pre-requisites (undergraduates must have fulfilled their ESL requirements, and graduate students must have fulfilled all but two ESL class requirements) on such issues as: participating in discussion classes, understanding assignments, avoiding plagiarism on assignments, comprehending cultural references and unfamiliar vocabulary in assigned and unassigned reading, crafting and delivering speeches, etc.
You may reserve a maximum of three 25 minute appointments each week. Appointments are reserved on line starting Monday, February 6, 2012. Appointments are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
IF YOU ARE A NON-NATIVE SPEAKER OF ENGLISH, PLEASE READ OUR ESL POLICY BEFORE REGISTERING FOR AN APPOINTMENT:
The services are open to all University of Iowa undergraduates who have not been held for any IIEP or ESL courses and to all University of Iowa graduate students who have not been held for any IIEP courses and who have been held for no more than two ESL courses. University of Iowa instructors are also welcome to use our services, and we have numerous resources available for instructors to check out.
Our Speaking Center tutors work with students to improve their public speaking skills, gain confidence in joining class discussion, and improve basic conversational language skills. We provide one-on-one and small group instruction to students who want to improve their speaking performance in any course or domain of university life. Instruction is tailored to students' individual needs and includes help with delivery techniques, methods of organizing material, strategies for effective presentations, options for preparing and practicing speeches, and methods of generating and using responses to speeches for further improvement.
The Speaking Center is also a resource for University of Iowa Professors and Graduate Teaching Assistants. Our tutors work with instructors to design and deliver effective lectures, overcome speech anxiety, organize presentations, and improve classroom dynamics. We also offer help on thesis and dissertation defenses, readings and other performances, job interviews, and conference presentations.
