CLAS Scholarships

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences currently supports 50 different scholarships through the College's annual scholarship competition. As a result of the generosity of all our scholarship donors, the College has been able to provide close to $409,300 in scholarship assistance to 126 students this fall.View 2014-2015 scholarship recipients.

Applications for the 2015–2016 school year will be available November 1, 2014–February 2, 2015.  Many scholarships require that applicants have filed the FAFSA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid). For continuing students, the FAFSA filed for the 2014-15 academic year will be used in the selection process. If you are a new incoming first year student or new transfer student, be sure to have your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) completed and submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid by March 15, 2015.

To be eligible for any CLAS scholarship, students must:

  • have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
  • be enrolled in a College of Liberal Arts & Sciences degree granting program and seeking your first undergraduate degree.

The deadline for most applications is Monday, February 2, 2015.  Letters of recommendation , when needed, will be accepted until Monday, February 9, 2015.  Scholarship awards will be announced by April 15, 2015.

Note: When applying, make sure you have the full name and correct University of Iowa e-mail address of those submitting letters of recommendation on your behalf. (Up to two people may submit letters of recommendation; all recommenders must be faculty, staff, or teaching assistants at The University of Iowa.)

Once you submit your application, an e-mail will be automatically sent to the individuals writing your letters of recommendation. That e-mail will contain the correct information on how to submit the letters of recommendation electronically.  Letters of recommendation cannot be submitted until your application is complete.

For entering first-year students only

Applications for the Shoemaker-Strickler Memorial Scholarship will be available November 1, 2014–February 2, 2015.  No application is required for the CLAS Excellence Award, Dean Gerhard Loewenberg Scholarship or the William and Effa McMeans Scholarship. The College works with the Offices of Admission and Financial Aid to determine the recipients.  Winners will be contacted by UI email on or before April 15, 2015.
