Obermann Center announces faculty research funding opportunities

The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies currently has three funding opportunities available to University of Iowa faculty. The deadline for the first three applications is April 7 by 5:00 pm. The Center will share details about the fourth opportunity, a digital humanities summer institute, soon; save the date if you are interested and stay tuned to the Obermann Center website for more details.

Application deadline April 7, 2015:

  • Obermann Summer Seminar Directorship -  An opportunity to lead a major collaborative project that will result in some form of publication or public work, the Summer Seminar brings together up to a dozen scholars for a week or more of concentrated interaction around a shared subject. Recent Summer Seminars have focused on Wittgenstein’s lectures from the early 1930s, social practice art, and school readiness for Iowa’s youngest students.   • Obermann Working Groups – Groups of six or more UI faculty, graduate students, and community experts meet once a month during the academic year to explore a shared intellectual interest.   • Humanities Without Walls Seed Grants – As part of the Mellon-funded Humanities Without Walls consortium, teams of faculty with members from two more of the 15 consortium universities can apply for funding to develop collaborative projects focused on an aspect of the topic, The Global Midwest. To help teams prepare, the Obermann Center will offer several seed grants of up to $10,000. Upcoming opportunity:

  • Grinnell College/University of Iowa Mellon-funded Summer Institute—The Center will invite applications to participate in this launching event for its four-year Mellon-funded collaboration, “Digital Bridges for Humanistic Inquiry: A Grinnell College/University of Iowa Partnership.” The first Summer Institute will be held in Grinnell the week of June 15-19, 2015, with a focus on digital pedagogy. Faculty members accepted into the Institute will receive a stipend to attend. A call for proposals is forthcoming.

The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers about 70 majors across the humanities; fine, performing and literary arts; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines.
