English Professor Claire Sponsler receives Bevington Award from the Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society

University of Iowa English Professor Claire Sponsler received the 2015 David Bevington Award from the Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society for her book, The Queen’s Dumbshows: John Lydgate and the Making of Early Theater.

Sponsler is an M.F. Carpenter Professor in the Department of English, part of the UI College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Her work centers on medieval literature, with a special interest in the overlapping areas of book history, performance, and cultural studies. She is also the winner of a Barnard Hewitt Award of the American Society for Theatre Research for her book, Ritual Imports: Performing Medieval Drama in America.

The Bevington Award is given annually to the best new book in early drama studies. The award was announced at the International Congress on Medieval Studies, which took place at Western Michigan University in May.


The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers about 70 majors across the humanities; fine, performing and literary arts; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines. About 15,000 undergraduate and nearly 2,000 graduate students study each year in the college’s 37 departments, led by faculty at the forefront of teaching and research in their disciplines. The college teaches all Iowa undergraduates through the college's general education program, CLAS CORE. About 80 percent of all Iowa undergraduates begin their academic journey in CLAS. The college confers about 60 percent of the university's bachelor's degrees each academic year.
