Muscatine, IA
class of 2014 student Molly Hammer

Majors: Ethics and Public Policy; Journalism and Mass Communication

How did you choose your majors?
I chose to major in Ethics and Public Policy because it offer such a wide range of classes. I've enjoyed having the opportunity to study Economics, Philosophy, and Sociology all at the same time. I decided to double major in Journalism and Mass Communication because the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) has a high standard of excellence. All of my professors have been engaged and forward thinking, and have helped me develop my research and writing skills.

Do you have a minor?
Yes, two: History and Sociology

I was the College Transitions Lab Leader for Sociology with University of Iowa Academic Advising, from August 2012 to December 2012, and I was a Business Process Improvement Intern with the HNI Corporation from June 2012 to August 2012.

What have some of your favorite classes been outside of your major? Why?
I enjoyed my first year Honors Seminar, Developing an Idea. It was a great introduction into college thinking and reasoning. The planning skills I learned in that class have helped me academically, professionally, and personally.

Have you participated in research projects with faculty members?
I am currently a member of the Iowa Policy Research Organization. IPRO is a University of Iowa undergraduate student research group that prepares high quality original policy research reports at the request of Iowa state legislators and other public officials in the state.

Who has been your favorite professor and why?
My favorite professor is Jane Singer. She taught the On the Campaign Trail: Elections & Media class I took in the Fall of 2012. It was an exciting class because we got to study the 2012 presidential campaign. Professor Singer respects students' ideas and encourages spirited debate. I gained a lot from her class, and in particular I learned the best ways to articulate my personal and political beliefs. I would highly recommend that all SJMC students take one of her classes.

What advice would you give to a first-year student?
The most important things to do during your first year at the University of Iowa are: ask questions, seek help, get involved, and develop lasting friendships. If you dedicate time to your academics and develop relationships on campus with faculty and other students, you will have an enriching college experience. College can be difficult, but it is important to remember that you are here for a reason. Always look forward and have your next goal in mind!

What are your post-graduation plans or dreams?
After graduation, I hope to attend law school. My dream job would be to work in public affairs.
