Aly Olson

Aly Olson is pursuing a bachelor of music in vocal performance, along with certificates in music education and performing arts entrepreneurship. After graduation, she envisions herself "doing a wide variety of things, from trying my luck at performing for a while, to teaching in secondary education, starting a (hopefully profitable) business as well as a non-profit. I also would like to travel extensively, especially to Africa, Sweden, and Prague." At the UI, she's involved in multiple organizations, including Student Philanthropy Group, Dean's Student Advisory Committee, President's Leadership Society, LeaderShape 2012, University Choir, Intramural Sports, and Dance Marathon, as well as the (off-campus) Miss Greater Des Moines Scholarship Program, the Miss Iowa Organization, and the Greater Des Moines and Iowa Valley Habitats for Humanity. It's no wonder her advice to first-year students is, "Start drinking coffee, so eventually you can forfeit sleep to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible here on campus! The best way to develop and grow as an adult and individual is to drink in as much as possible."

Her favorite teacher is her voice professor Stephen Swanson, "because he is a wonderful singer and performer. Hearing him sing is a joy and inspires me to continue to improve my craft!" When not singing or participating in campus activities, Aly likes to go on road trips, attend UI arts events and sporting events, and complete jigsaw puzzles.
