The University of Iowa, School of Social Work launched the BA in Social Work program in Des Moines Fall 2010. Fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the program is administered by the School of Social Work in cooperation with the Division of Continuing Education.

The program is designed for students who have earned their associate degree, or are transferring with two years of completed undergraduate coursework. The program is sequenced and begins each fall. Full-time, two-year students take an average of two courses in social work each semester and enroll in at least six semester hours of additional upper-division courses offered by the UI each semester, including summer, to complete the degree in two years. Part-time, three-year students take an average of one social work course each semester and up to six semester hours of additional upper-division courses each semester, including summer.

All social work courses are currently taught in the classrooms at the Iowa Center for Higher Education in Des Moines--though due to recent budgetary decisions made by University of Iowa, that facility will be closing and we will move our classes to the John and Mary Pappajohn Education Center in Spring 2019. Other requirements are offered online or through a combination of classroom and online methods. Students do not need to travel to the main UI campus in Iowa City for any courses, though it is an option for those interested.

Applications accepted anytime. To be eligible for admission, students must earn a C or better in SSW:2222 Introduction to Social Work, or a transfer equivalent course, and have a minimum GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.0 scale). For more information, see Admission or contact Christy Thies: christy-thies@uiowa.edu or 515-235-4662.
