Statement on School Shootings

February 22, 2018 - 8:30am

The School of Social Work supports the advocacy efforts of junior high and high school students from Florida and across the country who are demanding action on gun reform following the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.  We recognize the trauma that the students and families in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are facing following the senseless shooting of students and school faculty/staff.  And, we recognize the fear that events such as this create for individuals throughout the country who may or may  not have experienced other situations with gun violence.  The youth who are part of the walkouts and demanding change are examples for us social workers on the importance of standing up to the opposition and never letting your voices be silenced by those who may be in positions of power.  We applaud their efforts and would challenge you to consider how are you lending support to social change in the face of trauma.
