Moeller Media Research Lab

You are here

The University of Iowa’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication opened a lab in fall 2011 dedicated to media research. The Les and Dorothy Moeller Media Research Lab is located on the second floor and is primarily for students and faculty with grants or sponsored research opportunities.

The room is set up to accommodate various types of research including experiments, focus groups, phone interviews, and content analyses of television programs and websites. According to former SJMC Professor Julie Andsager, Director of the lab when it opened, "Students and faculty now have much more flexibility in the types of research they conduct.” Research on health communication issues that involve testing media messages and techniques will likely be a mainstay of activity in the lab.

Funds for equipment in the lab and the assigning of the room came from a fund set up by the late Les and Dorothy Moeller. Les Moeller was one of the first two graduates from the University of Iowa’s School of Journalism and served as Director of the school from 1947 to 1967. Dorothy Moeller was a professor at Iowa. Both Les and Dorothy are members of the school’s Hall of Fame.

The school used the Moellers’ donation to purchase cameras, desktop and laptop computers, a television with DVR capabilities, a device that records phone interviews, and several specialized software programs that make data collection and analysis more efficient.
