Steve has been most interested in the study of personal relationships and the ways in which they are rhetorically presented in everyday life interaction. He founded and then edited for fifteen years the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships and has written or edited some fifty-five books on personal relationships.

His most recent books are Rethinking Relationships through Rhetoric [Cognella Press, 2023] and (with David T. McMahan) an introduction to the Basic Course (Communication in Everyday Life: The Basic Course, third edition, SAGE, 2021) and Communication in Everyday Life: A Survey, fourth edition (SAGE, 2021).

A former College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean's Administrative Fellow, he served as Departmental Executive Officer (Chair) of the Department of Rhetoric from 2010-2022 and was also on the Executive Committee of University College and the Executive Committee of CLAS.  He was Chair of Faculty Assembly 2020-2021.
