Steve has been most interested in the study of personal relationships and the ways in which they are rhetorically presented in everyday life interaction. He founded and then edited for fifteen years the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships and has written or edited some fifty books on personal relationships.

His most recent books (with David T. McMahan) are introduction to the Basic Course (Communication in Everyday Life: The Basic Course, second edition, SAGE, 2017) and Communication in Everyday Life: A Survey, third edition (SAGE, 2017).

A former College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean's Administrative Fellow, he has served as Departmental Executive Officer (Chair) of the Department of Rhetoric since 2010 and is also on the Executive Committee of University College.
