Return-to-campus guidelines for CLAS faculty and staff

Following guidance from the Office of the Provost, the UI's Critical Incident Management Team, and UI Human Resources, CLAS has developed guidelines and criteria for determining whether an individual faculty or staff member will return to campus for work in the fall semester, to what extent, and for what purpose. DEOs, administrators, and unit leaders have been provided guidance regarding these criteria and guidelines.

Because CLAS departments and units are widely varied in size and mission, decisions about individual faculty and staff work expectations will be made at the local level, according to guidelines established and enforced by the CLAS Dean's Office.

Staff supervisors will lead a review of their staff with regard to these guidelines; DEOs and/or administrators will review faculty members.

Supervisors and DEOs will be guided by the following considerations:

  • If the essential responsibilities of a role do not require an on-campus presence, faculty and staff in the role should continue to work remotely.
  • If the essential responsibilities of a role require an on-campus presence, faculty and staff in the role should be on campus for only those responsibilities.
  • Units must maintain business-critical availability to students and colleagues, while respecting social distancing.

Units will be expected to follow these collegiate standards when making their recommendations:

  • Persons with medical vulnerabilities as defined by the CDC, or who have a household member with such medical vulnerabilities, must be provided with information about how to request temporary alternative work arrangements:
    • The form for submitting a request is available on the UI Faculty and Staff Disability Services (FSDS) website.

    • CLAS and CLAS Human Resources recommend that if you wish to seek a temporary alternative work arrangement beyond the COVID-19 workplace measures taken by their respective departments or units, you should directly submit your own intake form, rather than having your supervisor or unit leader do so on your behalf. Once you have submitted the form, FSDS will verify eligibility, and route to CLAS HR. CLAS HR will work with local unit DEOs, supervisors, and administrators to review and respond to the requests.

    • If you have questions about the process, or need assistance with submitting the form, please contact your departmental CLAS HR representative.

    • Persons with on-campus responsibilities who want to request temporary alternative work arrangements unrelated to medical vulnerabilities as defined by the CDC may contact CLAS Human Resources for consultation, in partnership with unit and collegiate leadership where necessary.

  • For faculty and staff whose essential responsibilities require an on-campus presence, the unit must enable proper social distancing by establishing adjusted break and lunch schedules, staggering arrival and departure times where possible, and arranging physical workspaces to ensure a distance of six feet between individuals.

If you have questions or concerns after consulting with your supervisor or DEO/unit leader about your work arrangement, please contact your departmental CLAS HR representative or the Associate Dean for your area. Should you feel the situation was not adequately resolved, further grievance and appeal options exist through UI Human Resources.
